OBJECTIVESThe objective of Philharmonic Youth Winds is to reach out to the younger audiences by being more involved in their music development and also to provide young passionate musicians an opportunity to further their ensemble experience. ABOUT USWith the objective of reaching out to the younger audiences by being more involved in their music development, the Philharmonic Youth Winds (also known as Philyouth) was initiated by the Philharmonic Winds (Philwinds), to provide young passionate musicians an opportunity to further their ensemble experience. The Philharmonic Youth Winds was formed in early 2002 and trained by members of Philwinds through sectional and combine rehearsals. Though under the wing of Philwinds, Philyouth pride themselves as a self-governed organization managed by their own committee under the guidance of Mr. Yeow Ching Shiong. In July 2002, Philyouth made their first public appearance together with the Philharmonic Winds in "All That Jazz" under their Resident Conductor, Mr. Zechariah Goh. In April 2003, Philyouth shared the stage with Philwinds once again in Philwinds' first ever-educational concert series- Young Peoples' Concert. That same year, Philyouth held its inaugural concert under the baton of then Resident Conductor, Mr. Zechariah Goh and guest conductor, Mr. Leonard Tan. In March 2004, Philyouth started their first installment of Concert@Campus series at LaSalle-SIA, College of the Arts under the baton of guest conductor, Mr. Andy Sim. This was immediately followed by a concert tour to Kuala Lumpur , Malaysia where Philyouth collaborated with Petaling Jaya Youth Symphonic Band (PJYSB) for a Joint Concert. The highlight of the concert, "Pines of Rome" by Ottorio Resphigi was performed by both bands on stage! (A total of 100 young musicians!) In the 2nd installment of Concert@Campus, Philyouth was honored to have guest conductor, Dr. Alan Lourens, Pro-Vice President of Lasalle-SIA College of the Arts. "Stormworks", "Ghost Train" and "Children's March" are among the interesting and yet challenging repertoires performed. In the same year, Philyouth was the Band-In-Attendance of the conducting workshop by world-renowned conductor, Maestro Timothy Reynish. 6 local young conductors took turns to conduct Philyouth, playing "First Suite in Eb" by Holst, "Irish Tune" by Grainger and "An American Elegy" by Tichelli, which was then commented and tutored by the Maestro under a room full of observers. Up to date, Philyouth had participated in four "Beautiful Sunday @ Esplanade" concerts (two of which as a combined perfomance with Philwinds), and collaborated with Philwinds to perform for the National Library Opening Ceremony and Changi Airports Terminal 3 Topping-Out Ceremony. Recently, Philyouth too part the inaugural "Singapore International Band Festival" which lasted from 22 - 27 July 2008 and achieved as Champion in the Division 1 Category. In addition to this accolade, Philyouth also clinched the Top Band Award with a score of 93.43% among all divisions. The Philharmonic Youth Winds, presently led by conductor Mr Adrian Chiang, aims to establish themselves as a youthful and vibrant ensemble through their attitude and passion towards music making.
