Leonard Tan - Andy Sim - Eric Lee - Alan Lourens

 

Mr Andy Sim Yih Shyang
LRSM, ATCL, Dip. Band Directing (NTU-NIE)

Andy Sim was enlisted into the SAF in 1992, he became a professional musician with the Singapore Navy Band which later was named the SAF Central Band where he heads the Examinations Department. He holds Diplomas in flute performance from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools and the Trinity College of Music, UK. He was awarded DipABRSM in Wind Band Directing with Distinction and Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music in Wind Band Directing in July 2002 and July 2003 respectively. In addition, he was amongst the most successful diploma candidates who were invited to perform during the ABRSM Southeast Asia Diploma Award Ceremony 2004. A recipient of the prestigious World Association of Symphonic Bands and Winds Ensembles Conducting Scholarship and the Rotary Club-National Arts Council Arts Training Grant, he attended the 6 th Annual "Wind Conductors' Symposium" where he studied under Professor Robert Gifford and participated masterclasses conducted by Professor Allan McMurray at the Southeast Missouri State University, USA.

Andy studied flute under Lee Kee Hoi and Jin Ta, harmony and orchestration under Leong Yoon Pin. He has participated in conducting masterclasses by Hardy Mertens (The Netherlands) and Ito Yasuhide ( Japan ). In August 2003, Andy attended the Wind Band Conductors' Course at the internationally renowned Canford Summer School of Music, UK where he studied with some of the world's leading teachers including Timothy Reynish, Phillip Scott, and Baldur Brönnimann. He was invited to conduct a workshop on various conducting techniques to his class of colleagues, and an invitation to conduct the Canford Symphonic Wind Orchestra at the course end concert.

In July 2005, Andy participated in the 10 th International Conductors' Contest held in Kerkrade , The Netherlands. He has also received a conducting scholarship awarded by Timothy Reynish and for the second time, the Rotary Club-National Arts Council Arts Training Grant to return to Canford Summer School of Music in August 2005. Andy was invited to conduct a workshop on conducting techniques for the primary school instructors in-con-junction with the Singapore Youth Wind Symphony's "Com Works" concert in March 2006.

Currently, Andy is the resident conductor of St. Hilda's Secondary School Wind Orchestra, Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary School Concert Band, and Woodgrove Secondary Symphonic Band. Andy is now pursuing a Fellowship of the Royal School of Music and Fellowship of the London College of Music in Music Direction.
